Aluminium Plant Safety

The Aluminium Plant Safety blog informs about accidents and near misses that occur in aluminium plants, cast houses, foundries, smelters, etc. that are around the world. Dust, molten metal steam explosions, fires, moving vehicles accidents, etc. will be covered. It is not this blog's intention to place blame on either company nor worker(s), but the hope that awareness of these accidents brings education and prevention of recurrence.

" rubbish at the back of a pre-heat furnace....ignited"

The importance of housekeeping is sometimes overlooked when it pertains toward safety. Here is a recent incident that illustrates how good housekeeping and safety are connected.

The incident took place at aluminium plant in the United Kingdom one morning during the week of July 19, 2020 shortly before 11:30 pm.

It involved rubbish at the back of a pre-heat furnace and fire crews used one hose reel jet to extinguish it.

Local Fire & Rescue Service sent two appliances from two from fire stations. An operations officer was also in attendance. Firefighters had dealt with incident by midnight.

We are glad no one was injured in this incident. This incident could have been much much worse. We have posted incidents in the past where improper storage of rubbish has resulted in large fire, explosions, etc. involving injuries and death.

All too often what we will observe on our plant visits is overflowing garbage or trash totes. That is a recipe for an incident about to happen.

Please comment.
