A small chemical fire inside an
aluminium rolling mill in the United States injured four people last Tuesday afternoon. The
fire was located in the coating line area of the plant while performing
maintenance on equipment.
“We had
four people, who were contract workers and not our employees, doing routine maintenance
in the coating line area,” company spokes person said. “All four were injured.”
Emergency
crews at the scene said three of the workers were taken to a local hospital,
where they were being treated for minor burns. A fourth worker was flown to 120
miles to a hospital burn center.
Officials
said the man flown to the hospital burn center could have sustained inhalation
injuries. Medical personnel at the scene said the man was talking and conscious
before the flight.
EMS
officials said the fire may have involved a solvent. According to the
Fire Marshal, the fire began as workers were doing routine cutting.
“Apparently
it was a quick flash fire that could have come from a spark that hit the
chemical,” Fire Marshal said.
“It
didn’t take them long,” Fire Marshal said. Reports indicate firefighters
left the scene just before 3 p.m. The investigation into the fire is
continuing. “We are in the initial phases of trying to determine what happened
and exactly what caused the fire."
