"roadway reopens after debris spill..."

The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog has posted incidents involving highway transportation to and from our facilities. The importance of properly strapping and securing material during transportation is important to not only the trucker driver but to local citizens. Here is an incident that had the potential to be a lot worse than it turned out to be:

Traffic is flowing again in the westbound lanes of the Audubon Parkway between Henderson and Owensboro, Kentucky in the USA one day during the first week of September 2015.

The lanes were closed for six hours as crews worked to clean up shards of metal.
One-inch pieces of aluminum were scattered across the roadway from the westbound entrance from Highway 60 all the way to the exit of the parkway at the 1mm near Owensboro.

Kentucky State Police received numerous calls from drivers for help with flat tires.
They are looking for who may have caused the nuisance. There could be charges if the person(s) are caught.

If authorities cannot find who is responsible, the drivers with flat tires may have to cover the cost of repairs themselves.

The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog is glad that no one was injured during this incident. This had the potential to be significantly worse than flat tires. No doubt flat tires are bothersome (one APSB has changed over 75 tires!) to say the least. Luckily none of the cars crashed because of the flat tires.

The APSB recommends that all material be tarped and/or doors securely locked to prevent this from occurring.

On an update, the Kentucky State Police found the trucking company who vehicle accidentally spilled the aluminium shards onto the roadway. The truck was enroute to a nearby aluminium plant when the incident occurred. We last heard that the trucking company had offered to purchase numerous replacement tires for the tires that went flat after riding over the shards.
