The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog has posted incidents involving
amputations. They commonly occur most often when the following equipment is
unguarded or inadequately safeguarded:
§ Mechanical power presses
§ Power press brakes
§ Powered and non-powered
conveyors
§ Roll-forming and
roll-bending machines
§ Band saws
§ Drill presses
§ Milling machines
§ Shears, grinders, and
slitters
§ Table and portable saws
Here is a recent story emphasizing the need for physical barriers
and machinery guarding.
Aluminium company spokesperson confirmed the industrial accident
occurred early one morning during the week of June 19, 2016, in which,
according to friends, the employee's leg was amputated while he was working on
equipment.
The aluminium company spokesperson said the cause of the
accident is being investigated. No word on the employee's condition.
The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog prays that the worker recovers as
well as one can who has suffered a leg amputation. We hope that the aluminum
company will offer physical and mental health counseling to the injured worker
and his family.
OSHA has an informative section titled: “Safeguarding Equipment andProtecting Employees from Amputations”. Which can be found here.
OSHA has the following quick card on amputations:
