"there's a million little pieces of metal in my tires..."

The hauling of shavings, grindings to our facilities is done on a daily basis with no problems. On occasion the leaking or spilling of grindings and shavings can occur. Here is a recent incident that occurred in the USA.

Several vehicles suffered tire damage after a truck spilled aluminium shavings along Dove and 24th streets in Port Huron and Port Huron Township Wednesday, December 20, 2017 in the evening.

The St. Clair County Sheriff Department public information officer, said the trucking (company) was issued a citation for the mess.

He said the truck was hauling aluminium shavings from a local factory to Indiana. The St. Clair County Sheriff Department public information officer said the driver was informed he was leaving a trail of shavings behind him by another driver and stopped on northbound 24th Street near Oak Street.

Those who had damaged vehicles will have to deal with the company as it is a civil matter, he said. 

Drivers were asked to avoid the area of 24th and Dove streets in Port Huron and Port Huron Township while the shavings were removed. 

A motorist was driving through the area when he noticed the debris and realized it wasn't salt. He pulled over to check his vehicle.

"I looked at my tires and there's a million little pieces of metal in my tires," said the motorist.

The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog is glad no one was injured. We hope in the future that not only the trucking company but the aluminium company will ensure that the box truck door is closed properly and locked to prevent an incident like this from occurring in the future.
