The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog has posted incident after incident
involving truckers. Here is a recent highlighting the hazard that existing
during the transportation of material to and from our plants:
A
truck carrying aluminum scrap fell on one day during the month of October 2019
on an avenue in the Industrial District, South Zone of Manaus in Brazil. According
to the uninjured driver of the vehicle, a load shift could have caused the tip
over.
The
accident occurred around 4 pm in the direction of Centro-neighborhood of
Avenida Buriti, near an intersection. The trailer tipped over the right
side of the track and part of the container being transported hit a power
distribution pole.
Due
to the incident, vehicle traffic on Buriti Avenue was blocked in one of the
lanes. Until 5:45 pm, the trailer remained in place. The driver, who declined
to be identified, told the news media that he was waiting for the company
responsible for the vehicle to arrive to pick up the material that was being
transported at the time of the accident.
We pray that the
worker was not injured. We are glad no nearby motorists were injured in this
incident. No doubt to the truck driver is at fault. For many in our industry
the transportation to and from our plants is handled by outside companies. For
as many incidents the Aluminium Plant Safety Blog posts, and we can post more.
We wonder what
companies do to reinforce the safety message to these truckers upon their
departure from our premises? Are we required to do something? No. Should we do
something? Maybe.
Please comment.
