The hazard of molten metal escaping a containers is
a reality in our industry. So much so that one aluminium plant has repeatedly
ask us to speak to their workers about molten metal spills. Here is a recent
incident emphasizing the hazard that molten metal spills can have:
White
smoke came from the roof of a warehouse in the industrial area in Germany.
According
to the initial findings by the police, there was no open fire. "Around 700
degrees of hot aluminum has leaked out," said a police officer.
That
probably caused the strong smoke development. The company's 15 employees, who
had been in the hall at the time, were not injured.
We are ecstatic no one was injured and pray that whatever ignited
did not cause much damage. Molten metal spills or leaks occur, every plant
(that has molten metal) has to educate their workers on what to do when (not
if!) it occurs. When was you last molten metal spill drill? If you cannot
remember then you need to schedule one soon.
