One common
characteristic of fires in our workplaces is the large generation of smoke. In
short order a small fire can grow large, and the billowing smoke can make it
nearly impossible to safely evacuate. Here is a recent incident highlighting
the importance of practicing and drilling for emergency evacuations.
Forces of the Fire Service
are fighting the flames, which are operating to extinguish a fire that broke
out on Wednesday morning (18/2) in an aluminum factory in the area of (omitted),
in (omitted). In fact, a firefighter was slightly injured during the
extinguishing operation.
The fire broke out at
about 11:30 and the flames are burning paints and cardboard boxes in the area
of the business.
The injured firefighter at
the (governmental) Hospital
The firefighter was
slightly injured during the situation and was transported by ambulance to the
governmental hospital for first aid.
Strong forces of the Fire
Brigade have been mobilized to extinguish the fire, consisting of 21
firefighters with seven vehicles. There are reportedly no people inside the
business.
We pray that
the injured fire fighter recovers fully from their burns. Thankfully all the
workers were able to safely evacuate. The combustibles appeared to be both
cardboard boxes and paint. If possible, combustibles must be segregated in the
workplace. All too often fires will grow larger because of the concentration of
combustibles.
