Many of our locations offer plant tours to nearby residents. Some of our plant offer tours to school children. On occasion an incident occurs illustrating that though these tours are for goodwill, there is a hazard associated to them. Here is a recent story.
In November 2017 a bicycle maker in Asia
provided a tour to a local group of 3 year students and female teachers. While
observing the parts manufacturing process the children and teachers were burned
by molten metal.
During the process of joining the bicycle parts
with the melted aluminum alloy, the students who were 2 meters away were hit
with molten aluminum particles. The molten metal landed on the thighs to the
ankles of the child. The children were handed over to parents after emergency treatment
at a clinic in the factory. The local police investigated the incident.
We pray that the children and adults who were
burned recover fully from their injuries and that no scars result.
The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog has posted
incidents in the past involving attendees of plant tours. These incidents occur
when plants fail to take into consideration all hazards that the plant tour
will be exposed to. If molten metal will be poured, transported, cast in the
presence of the plant tour attendees that a boundary of 15 meters be given. The
other safer option is to video tape the process and to show the recording near
the equipment (that is shutdown).
