Readers are aware that the Aluminium Plant Safety blog informs about accidents and near misses that occur in aluminium plants, cast houses, foundries, smelters, etc. that are around the world. The intent of this blog has never been to harm or disparage any company or injured worker. Our hope is that by posting incidents it brings awareness of these accidents which brings education and prevention of recurrence.
The APSB has received numerous emails from readers commenting that this blog is a great source for "toolbox talks" because of focus on the aluminium industry. Toolbox talks are used to cover a variety of short safety training topics and to remind employees each day before they go to work, that they are important, they have a family, they have friends, the importance of being safe effects many, not just one. Here is a great story:
Aleris employees who work at the company's Wabash recycling facility (in Indiana, United States) were recently recognized by company leadership for a safety record.
The plant, which employs 35 people mostly from the Wabash area, received from the company's CEO Safety Excellence Award for achieving an annual recordable injury and illness rate that was below aluminium manufacturing benchmarks. The plant recently marked 680 days without an injury, which is the plant's longest stretch without an injury since 2007.
Congratulations to all the employees and to all the corporate support staff that assisted the Aleris Wabash facility in this award.
The APSB hopes that this facilities safety award will be used a toolbox topic at your plant in the near future.
