No matter where your workplace is located (on the shop
floor, or in an office) you should be trained to handle all sorts of
emergencies. The Aluminium Plant Safety Blog has a recent story where the
office personnel of aluminum die casting company had to handle an emergency.
Here is the story:
A fire broke out one morning during the week of August
31, 2014 in an office area of Allied Die Casting in Illinois in the United
States, fire officials said.
The blaze started in the one-story manufacturing
facility, McHenry Township Fire Protection District officials said in a
release.
Firefighters found smoke throughout the building at the
ceiling level coming from a fire in a void space above a drop ceiling in an
office.
The fire was quickly extinguished and remains under
investigation. Nobody was injured. Borden Street and West Avenue were closed
for approximately 40 minutes during the fire.
This incident was small and was handled quickly by the
company personnel with the assistance of the local fire department. Congratulations
to this company’s personnel in successfully evacuating the building. Unfortunately,
not all incidents occur in the daylight and are small. Incidents can occur at any time. The previous statement is not
intended to scare the reader but to reinforce to the reader the importance of
listening and following the instructions of given by their ehs personnel.
In every office there should be a workplace emergency
evacuation map posted near entrances and exits. Does your facility have an
emergency evacuation map posted? If not you should.
