The
importance of reaching out to your employees via social media was unheard of a
few years ago by companies in our industry. No longer, there are numerous
companies around the globe who have realized the importance that social media
has in fostering a safe workplace. The editors of the Aluminium Plant Safety
Blog follow numerous aluminium companies on Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. Each
social media platform has its own advantage and disadvantages. Does your company
have a presence on social media regarding safety related topics? If you do not
we would recommend that first you start following some aluminium companies that
do. We are only going to highlight four companies that the APSB is impressed
with their social media exposure.
TST
Inc. out of North America has done a great job on Facebook and other social media
platforms. With numerous locations TST is always posting about safety events, highlighting
a worker’s employment anniversary, or mentioning about a wellness event. In addition
TST Inc. has posted videos on their own Youtube channel that are simply great. and
show to their workers that 1. Management cares about their safety 2. Helps instill
pride in their work. Below is a recent Facebook posting.
Aluminium
Bahrain. This past year we had the opportunity to visit with Tim Murray, CEO of
Alba in Bahrain. Tim took the helm at Alba in 2012 and has done a great job in
developing and fostering a safe working environment. Tim’s embrace of social
media was in part because he acknowledge that Alba workers were using Instagram.
So, Alba4world Instagram was developed as an avenue to reach out to their employees
and to the world. We love the Instagram account and from speaking with various
workers at Alba, they do too. So, please look up Alba4world on Instagram. Here
is a recent post:
Aleris
has done a great job on the social media platform Twitter. Aleris posts a mix
of corporate messaging, safety messages, and volunteer activities. Here is a recent posting.
No other company with as
many facilities around the globe as Sapa has (over 100!) done such a great job at
developing a safety culture at each and every plant. Sapa utilizes their Youtube page to post safety videos.
These videos and subsequent safety campaigns are excellent in our opinion. The video below is 8 minutes long, and in our opinion it is great. Please watch it.

Keep up the good work Sapa!
