The importance of properly securing loads has been hazard the
Aluminium Plant Safety Blog been highlighting for the past 11 years. Here is
another recent incident of emphasizing the need for proper load securement.
All lanes of I-75 were closed in the Clio area after a Genesee
County Sheriff's Office patrol car got hit during snowy weather. Sheriff said a
semi-truck hit the patrol car on I-75 in Vienna Township. There was no word on
injuries.
All northbound and southbound lanes of the
freeway were closed in northern Genesee and southern Saginaw counties for
several hours, according to the Genesee County 911 Center.
The northbound lanes were closed between Mt. Morris Road and Birch Run Road. The southbound lanes were closed between Birch Run Road and M-57 in Clio.
The northbound lanes reopened around 2:30 p.m. Captain with the
Genesee County Sheriff's Office said the southbound lanes were closed longer,
because a semi-truck lost its load of aluminum coils on the freeway.
The southbound lanes reopened around 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Separately, westbound I-69 was closed east of Davison after a
serious crash was reported near the Genesee-Lapeer county line. All lanes
reopened in that area around 12:50 p.m.
Traffic was moving slowly on westbound I-69
near Dort Highway after two semi-trucks jackknifed and crashed around 12:15
p.m. All lanes were closed from around 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. while crews
worked to clear the scene.
Mid-Michigan was seeing moderate snowfall
through the midday hours. The Storm Tracker 12 weather team forecast about 2 to
4 inches of snowfall through Monday afternoon.
Police are asking motorists to avoid
traveling unless it is absolutely necessary.
Davison Community Schools will be releasing
students 20 minutes early from Hahn Intermediate School, Davison Middle School,
Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education on Monday due to slippery
roads.
They hope letting older students out early will give bus drivers enough time to complete their routes before the normal dismissal time for elementary students. All events are canceled at Davison schools Monday evening.
Please note we normally do not mentioned company name nor location but in this incident no company name is visible and the location of the accident does not lead the reader to surmise which company the material came from.
At the time of publication, the news article stated that “There was no word on injuries.” We pray that this is still the case that no one was injured.
We acknowledge this incident was may be usual but we still believe the load needed more securement to prevent the load from coming off during the accident. We have reported on many incidents where the load stayed secured when the trailer toppled over.
Please comment.
