Our industry’s hazards are numerous. For the most part incidents do not make it into the news media unless the incident results in a injury (requiring an ambulance) or sadly a fatality. Out of all the hazards our industry mitigates on a daily basis. Molten metal explosions is the only hazard that has historically injured and killed more workers. In addition, no other hazard has the potential to shutter a workplace and possibly a company than a molten metal explosion. Sadly, here was an incident emphasizing this hazard that many in our industry acknowledge the severity of. Unfortunately, there are still some in our industry fail to recognize the danger of molten metal explosions. Till it is too late.

The deadly explosion happened at a (company name omitted) aluminium factory at around 4am, an eyewitness who preferred not to be named said.

A 30-year-old factory worker has been killed and four others sustained serious injuries after an explosion at a factory in (name omitted) division, (name omitted) district on Saturday. The eyewitness said that five people were working at the furnace inside the factory. One of them then reportedly placed a metallic object inside the oven, which later exploded. The worker, 30, died on the spot. His body was taken to (local) Hospital Mortuary.

Regional Police spokesperson confirmed that the explosion caused injuries and death, adding that the factory owners would be charged with rash and neglect for causing death, as investigations proceed. The management of the factory denied journalists access to the factory premises and only allowed a Police van inside. Regional Police spokesperson cautioned all scrap and aluminum factory owners to be vigilant of metals and the scrap they buy and use before placing them in a furnace.

We offer our sincere condolences to the deceased worker’s family, friends, and coworkers. The local police issued a video describing the incident and stating that some workers placed something that might have been a grenade in the furnace just prior to the explosion. It is assumed that a live grenade was charged into the furnace. Though this country has undergo a civil war for decades and the proliferation of explosives is commonplace. We have seen similar incidents occur in the USA. Sadly, we reported on an incident where a live tank or artillery shell was charged in a furnace. It should go without warning that explosives of any form or shape be kept out of a furnace.
