Truck accident...

The transportation of molten aluminium occurs daily with no incidents. But occasionally an incident occurs. Sometimes the driver is injured or killed. Or even a nearby motorist or pedestrian are injured or killed. The hazard of molten metal transport outside our factory gates is a hazard some fail to acknowledge.

According to the Daviess County Emergency Management Agency, I-165 is closed at the Fairview Drive overpass due to a semi truck losing it’s load of molten aluminum in the northbound lanes.

At this time, both north and southbound lanes of I-165 are closed and are expected to remain closed for the next 6 to 10 hours. Drivers can detour using U.S. 231.

We are thankful no one was injured in this incident. The truck driver told the police in an interview that was asleep at the wheel. Again, we are thankful no one was injured or killed in this incident.

The common factors that result in a vehicle hauling molten metal going off the road in no order are the following:

  • Unfamiliar road (bad GPS directions)
  • Mechanical issues (loss of brakes)
  • Weather (rain/snow - slick roads)
  • Drugs (driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs)
  • Fatigue (driver falls asleep or loses concentration)
Lastly, we would be remiss if we did not mention that normally we do not mention the company name nor location. We chose to name the location because by our count we believe we have posted 3-4 similar incidents on this same highway! The last one was because of slick roads. Sadly, this most recent was because of fatigue.

Please comment.
