Fire at cold mill....

A fire can occur without warning. Once a fire is detected what happens next is important. Important in preventing injuries and facility damage.

Here is a story of a fire that occurred this past week:

A fire on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 caused an estimated $1,500 in damage at the Aleris Rolled Products facility in Uhrichsville, Ohio, USA. At 2:36 PM a caller reported smoke in a room according to local a fire fighter. The local fire department arrived to find fire in the cold mill filter room in the facility that makes aluminium products. The facility's fire suppression system was activated to remove oxygen from fueling the fire.

The fire fighter said there wasn't a lot of fire, but there was a substantial amount of smoke from a smoldering wood-fiber material. He said it's believed that the fire was started by some type of electrical short in a machine that involves plastic pipe and the wood-fiber material. The fire was contained to the room attached to the main building.

Firefighters took about an hour to extinguish the fire and remove smoldering debris. Damage was estimated at bout $1,000 to the property, plus $500 to the contents. All employees were initially evacuated from the facility, but the plant was back in service within a couple of hours. The fire department credit plant personnel for assisting firefighters.

The Uhrichsville fire caused an estimate $1500 damage. Which does not include the cost for the loss of production time. Nevertheless, this incident could have been much, much worse.

Do you recall the fire in the cast house in New York this past  summer? That incident started out small, but due to unforeseen circumstances grew large, very large. The New York fire has cost millions of dollars.
