"Worker fell or was pushed into furnace...."

Though there are all types of furnaces to melt aluminium. All are very dangerous but incidents still occur with some regularity. Here is a recent incident highlighting the hazards associated with furnaces.

A death investigation is underway in (location omitted), after a worker at the (an aluminium plant) facility died.

The (local) County Coroner's Office said they were called to the facility to conduct a death investigation.

The (state) Department of Homeland Security, the (local) Fire Department, and the Shelbyville Police Department, the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the (state) State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

Details surrounding the victim's death have not been released as authorities continue the investigation.

The pertinent government safety organization said information is limited and additional details, including the cause and manner of death will be released, once the victim is identified and the family is notified.

The casting facility in (location omitted) makes aluminum castings for car parts and structural applications. The melting point of aluminum is 1,220 degrees F.

(Company name) released a statement on Saturday regarding the incident.

"(company name omitted) confirms that one of our team members died following an incident at our (location name omitted) facility on the evening of (August 2026).

"Our deepest condolences go out to the employee's family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for the family, we are not releasing further personal details.

"The safety of our associates is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with OSHA and local authorities as they conduct their review. We are also conducting our own internal review of the incident.

"We are providing support resources, including counseling services, to our associates and their families as we work through this together as a (company name omitted) team.

"We ask for privacy for the employee's family and our team members during this time.

"We will provide additional information as it becomes available."

We offer our sincere condolences to the deceased worker’s family, friends and coworkers. We have heard the emergency call from the aluminium plant. The caller said a worker was trapped in the furnace. Subsequent radio transmissions from the fire department confirmed a worker was in the furnace and dead. We do not know the type of furnace, for example side charging or vertical. Other news articles state the deceased was a maintenance worker performing a task on the furnace.

If your workplace has a furnace, the question should be asked “Can a worker fall or be pushed into the furnace opening?” If the answer is yes, then engineering controls need to be investigated to prevent that from happening.
