Transportation hazards are rarely discussed in our industry. That is because many times the final products are shipped by a third party. Nevertheless, many incidents occur during transportation when improper load securement is allowed to occur. Here is yet another incident that may have been prevented if the load was properly secured to the bed of the trailer.
18-WHEELER
FLIES OFF THE INTERSTATE: This was a sight to behold and has caused big-time
backups and delays all through downtown Charleston. This 18-wheeler was
carrying aluminum rolls with tandem drivers in the cab of the truck. The driver
was ejected as an aluminum roll took the driver's seat as it came crashing down
off of I-64 East at the split in Charelston, WV. That building had a hole in
the top of it, and those tanks on their sides were thrown 30+ yards. The truck
was riding the guard rail about 100 yards before the weight of the trailer
swung the entire truck around and flung it off the bridge to the Department of
Highways truck yard below. Both drivers are alive, and the investigation
continues at this hour, as of 8:30am on Wednesday, August 19th.
We pray that the injured occupants of the truck recovery fully from
their injuries.
We make the statement regarding improper load securement from the photos showing the load exited the trailer. As well as this quote, “as the driver Negotiated the turn, the load shifted, Send the driver to lose control of the vehicle.” If the load was properly secured, the load would not have shifted.
