Does your plant hold safety drills? If the answer
is no, you should. Here is a recent incident that ended without injury because
the plant was prepared. Here is the story:
Crews responded to a fire at the an aluminium
plant in the SouthEast United States one after during the week of August 2,
2002. As of 30 minutes after the initial call heavy smoke was still visible
from the building.
A spokesperson
for the plant confirmed that as of 4:30 p.m., the fire was contained.
The local Fire Department and EMS were on scene. As well as
numerous other neighboring fire departments.
According to a statement from aluminium
company, the fire broke out in the melt/cast area in one of the buildings. The
plant was evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.
The aluminium company said that their
“priority is ensuring the safety of everyone on the premises and extinguishing
the fire.” They said that they are “grateful to [their] teammates for helping
everyone evacuate quickly and safely and to the first responders who arrived so
quickly and continue to bring resolution to this incident.”
They plan to investigate as soon as the fire is under control, and
will share details of that investigation at a later time.
We are thankful no one was injured. Though we
do not know the cause of the incident we assume it was either a molten metal
spill that came into contact with flammable material or it was an explosion. We
may be incorrect with our assumptions. Regardless, when information is put
forth we will update this post.
First, we are proud that the aluminum company evacuated
safely all of the workers. We have reported incidents where workers have been
injured and/or died during an evacuation. No doubt this incident occurring during
the day allowed for easier evacuation. In addition, we are also glad no fire department
personnel were injured.
Lastly, when was the last time you had a fire drill?
If you cannot remember quickly then it has been too long.
