"Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) plant collapses...."

The maintenance of older machinery is highlighted in this incident.

A major accident was averted at an aluminium plant in (name omitted) district. Here, the nearly 20-year-old Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) plant suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, no one was present at the time of the incident, which did not cause any loss of life. After the accident, there was chaos in the plant premises.

According to the information, this plant was built in 2004-05 by the (company name omitted). The employees allege that under pressure from industrialists, the labour department is only doing formalities and safety standards are being ignored.

We are thankful that no one was injured nor killed in this sudden collapse. Many times, on our travels we have observed workers standing near/under precipitators, dust collectors, etc. We asked a worker why they are standing there? They told us they liked the shade of the hot sun, and the breeze. Since then we have always recommended that the workplace install fences around machinery that is located outside of their facilities.
