For the longest time we thought a face shield was sufficient when performing tasks with molten metal. That was until we were at a new casthouse and the equipment manufacturer representative explained that safety glasses must be worn under a face shield. Because the individual knew of incidents that molten metal got under the face shield and enter the workers’ eye(s). Here is a recent incident highlighting that exact hazard.
A 33-year-old worker was involved in a work accident at a metal processing plant Wednesday evening. In (March 2026) the worker sustained serious injuries. According to previous information, there was an incident when dealing with liquid metal: a splatter reached under the hood of his helmet he was wearing and hit the man in the eye.
We pray that the injured worker was able to get to the necessary eye specialist and save the sight in their eye. If your workplace processes molten metal, your workers must wear a face shield with safety glasses.
