Working near overhead powerlines is a hazard many workplaces are aware of. Combine that with working in poor lighting is a recipe for disaster. Here is a recent incident we pray is never repeated.
Crane hits power line: 2 workers were seriously injured by being caught in the current!
The work accident that occurred in the evening hours at the construction site of the (an aluminium) factory in the (town name omitted) caused great panic. Two workers working with a basket crane were seriously injured by being caught in the current as a result of contact with the high voltage line.
Unnoticed danger in the dark
The incident took place in the area where the expansion and construction works of the factory were underway, at dusk. According to the information obtained, the workers working in the subcontractor company that undertook the construction work were working on the basket crane when the arm (boom) of the crane hit the high voltage line passing through the area. The fact that the line could not be noticed due to the darkness brought the disaster.
When the crane came into contact with the wires, the two workers in the basket were exposed to thousands of volts of electric current.
Life-threatening conditions continue
Upon the notification of the employees in the vicinity, gendarmerie and emergency medical teams were dispatched to the area without wasting time. After the first aid interventions at the scene, two seriously injured workers were transferred to the hospital and treated in the intensive care unit. According to the information received from the hospital, it was learned that the health condition of the injured workers remained serious.
Investigation Launched
After the work accident, gendarmerie teams started an investigation at the construction site, and a large-scale investigation is being carried out to determine whether there was negligence in the incident.
We pray for the injured workers survive their injuries. We pray that the workers recover fully from their injuries. We hope the company
On the other hand, (government safety organization) teams also launched an investigation into the incident.
We pray for the injured workers. We pray that they survive their injuries and recover fully from them. Please note we do not know if they workers were aluminum company employees or if they were contractors. Regardless, of who their employer is. We pray that they are provided with both occupational and mental health counseling.
We do want to comment on the incident. Darkness played a significant role in this incident occurring. On our plant tours we discussed working at night but never heard of nor discussed the issue with powerlines during construction activities at night. We will now discuss this hazard.
As always, when we discuss incidents, we never mention the company name nor location. Why? With all due respect to every worker involved in an incident and their families. We do not place blame on the company nor the worker(s) but post incidents, travel countless days away from our family, write a dozen safety publications a year and speak to thousands of workers so we can hopefully prevent a recurrence. That is our goal.
Please comment.
